A Narcissus Miracle

A Narcissus Miracle

By Alice Sherwood, Easter, 2010

She gave me a flower
and I saw Jesus.
At Christmas, it grew tall, sprouted,
then flowered majestically, God-like,
a Trinity in white.
Months passed
a blue season
cold, dark, dreary, sad, miserable,
interminable.
Then I noticed…
there among the stones she had placed
so lovingly in the earth around it,
a green shoot appeared,
then a bud
and a blossom on Easter day.
A full flower
white and pure–just one
the Only One.
There was no grand stem, no leaf, only the flower
pure and bright as glistening snow
risen out of the stones.
But wait later.
Three days later, not one, but two
new flowers appeared in splendor.
Out of the stones they arose, unfolded, and sat
a pair of matching angels.
Looking closely, I’m sure I heard them whisper;
Why do you look for the living among the dead?
He is not here; he has risen!
